Do you want to support your pet’s health naturally? Check out these DIY essential oil recipes for pets to help you get started.
Pour the castille soap in a 4 ounce bottle. Add the essential oil drops. Top with the aloe gel. Cap and shake.
Add essential oil drops to jojoba oil. Cap and shake. Apply 2 to 4 drops to neck, chest, legs and tail base of your dog. Do not apply more than once a day. If you have a puppy, ill or elderly dog, omit the spearmint essential oil. You can also apply the drops to a bandana or cotton collar. This is a strong formulation. I would recommend reducing the number of drops to half for the first batch to slowly introduce it to your dog. If you have a smaller dog, using half the number of drops in this recipe is recommended.
Add the essential oils drops to the 1 ounce container. Add the aloe gel using a funnel (a funnel makes it much easier to pour the aloe gel into the small opening). Cap and shake. Spray or pump a small amount in your hands when your dog is feeling stressed, anxious or fearful. Rub your hands together and approach him or her so they can smell your hands. Then apply to the top and bottom of their neck in long, gentle strokes.
This recipe is best for dogs under 60 pounds. If your dog is over 60 pounds, double the number of essential oil drops.
It is important to never use essential oils with cats, birds or other small animals such as ferrets and hamsters. They are simply way to strong for them. Cats in particular can not process and eliminate them and can build up a toxicity. Hydrosols and carrier or vegetable oils like jojoba oil are a safe alternative to use with smaller pets, birds and cats. We will be building this page and adding more aromatherapy recipes for pets in the near future including safe alternatives for cats, birds and other smaller pets.
In the meantime, I would encourage you to check out our Boo Boo Balm for pets. It was formulated for wound healing, mange, hot spots and other skin challenges. It does not contain any essential oils and is safe to use for all animals. It was originally formulated for Blackie, a beautiful cat that developed hot spots after moving from the dry air in Tucson, to humid Florida.
